SCARECROWS OF THE PORT COMING THIS OCTOBER

PORTSMOUTH, NH, July 21, 2008 – Don’t expect to see many crows around the Seacoast this October.

The First Annual Scarecrows of the Port is a celebration of the harvest season harborside in this charming New England city, featuring creative scarecrows throughout the city, music, food, contests, shopping, and more.

The inaugural season of Scarecrows of the Port takes place from Friday, October 17th through Sunday, November 2nd. Businesses and residents alike are invited to participate in this one-of-a-kind festival.

This event is scheduled to coincide with the commissioning of the submarine USS New Hampshire, scheduled to take place on October 25th at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. The commissioning is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Portsmouth and the greater Seacoast area.

Plans for Scarecrows of the Port include placement of scarecrows in various themed attire throughout the city. Businesses and restaurants alike are invited to participate simply by adorning their storefronts with fall harvest decorations and with their own unique scarecrow.

The kick-off for the event is scheduled for Friday, October 17.   Hosted by The West End Business Association, the evening is expected to include a scarecrow competition, refreshments and entertainment. The evening will also feature musicians at designated street corners throughout downtown Portsmouth, with many businesses extending their hours for the evening.

Scarecrows of the Port is a joint venture of several Seacoast organizations. In addition to The West End Business Association, representatives from The Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce, The Downtown Business Association, The State Street Business Association, The Deer Street Merchants Association, The Tenants Association at Pease, and Seacoast Buy Local are participating in the planning of the grass-roots event.

Residents are also invited to participate. Neighborhood associations are encouraged to work together to make the Seacoast a unique place to visit this fall.
